Property description

A five bedroom former public house with a double garage and parking, in a conservation area near the centre of the village of Ashwell.

The property is thought to have originally been a group of farm cottages which were bought by John Bailey, an Ashwell builder in 1836, and became a beer house. It is believed that it took its name from a steam threshing engine which was possibly situated in the garden of 110 High Street. In 1886 Fordham’s Brewery took over the pub. It eventually became part of Whitbread’s public houses in 1962 and closed as a pub in 1993. The property has been extended and improved over recent years and now has approximately 2,729 sq. ft. of accommodation with five bedrooms, and four reception rooms and a conservatory. It retains character features including an inglenook fireplace in the sitting room, exposed beams, and a cellar and there is an old well just to the rear of the house. There is a private enclosed garden and a double garage with parking accessed via Wilsons Lane which is a one-way street leading from The High Street.

Ground Floor

The entrance at the front gives access to a hall with doors to a study which has a fireplace, and the sitting room which has a wood burning stove and built-in book shelves. The family room has three windows to the front and a fireplace which is not currently in use. The kitchen has a built-in base units, a range cooker and an opening to the dining room which has another wood burning stove and double doors to the conservatory.

First Floor and Gardens

The principal bedroom has an en suite shower room and built-in wardrobes. Bedroom two is to the rear and the other bedrooms all have windows to the front. These bedrooms share two bathrooms. The rear garden has a block paved patio and a path to the double garage and parking area. The garage has power and light.
