Our Guide to Bedford: One of the Best Commuter Towns

With Michael Graham offices in Milton Keynes and the surrounding market towns of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire, we are perfectly placed to market country homes to London commuters. Recently The Sunday Times featured Bedford one of the best commuter towns, so why does Bedford tick so many commuter boxes?

Property Prices

One good reason for Bedford being one of the best commuter towns is property prices. You can get a lot more bricks and mortar for your money if you’re selling up in London and buying a house in Bedford.

Journey Times

If you’re moving out of London but still commuting you’ll want as short a journey to work as possible. Bedford is just 39 minutes by train at peak-time. From May this will change in the short term while East Midlands Rail carry out upgrade works, but Thameslink is adding two express trains an hour in the mornings and evenings, which will take 47 minutes. Motorway links are great too. Bedford sits between the M1 and A1(M) and Milton Keynes is half an hour’s drive away on the A421.

Excellent Eduction

For buyers with school-age children Bedford is a gem of a county. Priory Primary School in the town centre is rated outstanding by Ofsted and if you’re going down the independent route, you’ve got Bedford School for Boys, Bedford Girls’ School and Bedford Modern which takes children from seven years old all the way up to 18 years.

Country Living

Bedford has a strong sense of community and loves a celebration, including the International Kite Festival and River Festival; the River Ouse runs through the centre of town. Fantastic independent shops and cafes abound, but Gunns Bakery on the high street deserves a special mention for their Bedfordshire Clanger. A pastry with a savoury filling at one end and a sweet filling at the other, it achieved the pinnacle of pastry fame when it featured on The Great British Bake Off last year. As if that’s not enough, Bedford has been voted the most generous town in the UK, which is something to smile about for anyone lucky enough to live there.
