History and Heritage

Quakers Farm was originally built by a noted Quaker, John White, in circa 1640 and twelve weddings are recorded as having taken place in the property during the 1600's. Other well known Quakers including William Penn, founder of the US State of Pennsylvania, and the poet John Milton, visited the house. The earliest recorded mentions of Meadle hamlet are when it was caught up in the battle between the Royalists in Oxford and the Parliamentarians in London during the English Civil War and there are rumours that a group of Parliamentarians were hidden up in the inglenook chimney in Quakers Farm at one point during the conflict. A local farm, Armour Farm, is believed to have acquired its name after it was used as a store for armaments for Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army.In more recent times, the American actor Dick Van Dyke was entertained to tea in the kitchen when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was being filmed in Meadle. The property has been in the vendor’s family since 1910.
