Good food is a key ingredient for a great Christmas and if this year has made you value your local shops more than ever, read on for our pick of the best farm shops across the counties of Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire:

Blog post intro image

Barnowl Farm Shop, Cloisters Farm, Evenley

Starting as an honesty box hut at the farm gate, a matter of months ago this family run farm shop expanded into a purpose built barn. The resident 220 strong Barnowl Jersey herd is milked on site and the farm shop sells raw (unpasteurised) and pasteurised milk, cream, ice-cream and cheese. Keeping food miles low is a priority and all fruit and veg and bakery goods are sourced as locally as possible from small businesses including Whittlebury Bakery and Butler’s Pie Company in Brackley. The extensive butcher's counter offers cuts of meat, sausages and burgers with free range turkeys available to order. Free range chickens provide their eggs but have no road sense so watch out for them as you approach the farm shop.

Saxby’s Cider Farm Shop, Farndish, Wellingborough

Say the word Saxby’s to most people in Northants and they’ll think of pork pies. Family business Saxby’s used to produce the crème de la crème of this traditional English meat pie and legend has it that best-ever Bond Sir Roger Moore used to eat them on set during filming. Sadly that iconic part of the family business closed in 2008 after 100 years of trading and the Saxby’s turned their attention to  brewing craft ciders from apples grown in their orchard. They create more varieties and flavours than you can shake a stick at including Original Cider, Rhubarb Cider, Plum Cider or a festive Mulled Cider perfect for Christmas. Pigs are still on the Saxby’s branding and on the farm but have got their Christmas wish and enjoy a long and happy life as much-loved pets.

White’s Nurseries Farm Shop, Earls Barton

White’s started as a small shop in Earls Barton in the 1940s and this family run business has been going from strength to strength ever since. You’ll find locally grown and homemade produce in abundance, including fresh milk and dairy products, a huge range of cheese from Folwer’s of Earlswood, local free range eggs, fresh juices and artisan drinks, honeys and preserves, cakes and breads as well as freshly prepared ready meals to take home. White’s also offer a box delivery service within a 10-mile radius of Earls Barton.

Beckworth Emporium, Mears Ashby

The Food Emporium at Beckworth is magnificent at any time of year, but at Christmas it takes on a magical quality. Fabulous local suppliers provide a wide range of fresh food and pantry staples including meat and fish, ready meals by COOK, bread, dairy products and real ales from Gun Dog Ales in the Northants village of Woodford Halse. You’ll also find an extensive deli counter and a restaurant where you can enjoy good food safe in the knowledge that you are supporting local businesses. In accordance with government tier two guidelines, there is just one household per table in the restaurant and a maximum of two people together in the shop this year.

Bell Plantation, Towcester

A wide range of locally produced food is available in this recently expanded food hall at Bell Plantation Garden Centre. Meats, locally baked breads and cakes, Northamptonshire dairy products, pastas and sauces and fresh and frozen ready meals by COOK make this a great destination for foodies. Plus, nearby Towcester Mill Brewery means the locally brewed beer on offer couldn’t be more local. As if that’s not enough to tempt you to a visit, the cafe here serves substantial meals, there are sparkly Christmas decorations aplenty to choose from and you can even buy your own chickens at the poultry centre to guarantee your own supply of free range eggs.

Smiths, Chapel Brampton

Smiths is a family-run business with a strong emphasis on sustainability and local produce. In the summer of 1958 they started out growing strawberries, using an honesty box outside a gate, before moving on to potatoes in the winter. How times have changed. The well-stocked farm shop sells seasonal, home grown veg, artisan breads from local bakery The Homemade Bread Company and fresh meats from Sauls of Spratton who also supply sausage rolls, pork pies, pasties and pâtés. Their Christmas trees sourced from a plantation in Leicestershire are also selling like hot cakes this year.

Fresh fruit and veg, store cupboard essentials, homemade jams, chutneys, pies, sausage rolls, cakes and a vast array of delicious deli items…the list goes on. The farm has an Aberdeen Angus herd and along with other locally sourced meat their butchery offers exceptional free range meat with the butcher on hand to offer cooking and prep advice. King’s Farm Shop, Wendover

Udderly Fresh, Winslow

The Barker family have been producing milk for over 35 years, and a father and son team currently run the farm which has a herd of Friesians and Norwegian Reds. Since 2016 their unpasteurised milk has been dispensed directly to customers from an on-farm vending machine and in 2018 they expanded to a farm shop selling fresh local produce.  Expect plenty of delicious local meats, baked goods and wine, as well as store cupboard essentials, jams and chutneys, perfect for popping in a home-made Christmas hamper. Eggs and meat are also stocked in the farm shop plus home-made cheeses and cakes, freshly-made artisan bread, coffee and boxes of seasonal fruit and veg. Closed on Mondays, check the website for opening times.

Everything in the farm shop, butchery and deli is available to order online with a click and collect service in place.

You will also have a disco ball and mini fridge stocked with your pre-ordered drinks. Breakfast costs £100 or £150 buys you lunch or afternoon tea for your household bubble of six.

Pecks Farm Shop, Leighton Buzzard

This award-winning farm shop between Leighton Buzzard and Milton Keynes sells food from the family’s 150 acre farm. Great believers in supporting the local community, 90% of the products Pecks stock are produced locally. So whether it’s sausages from Eaton Bray, beer from Leighton Buzzard, or Granola from High Wycombe, you’ll be doing your bit to support local businesses, many of which are struggling to stay afloat this year. The Christmas hampers here deserve a special mention and would make great presents for friends and family. The Ploughman’s Christmas hamper is a steal at £15.99.
