Family days out this Summer: Where to go in 2023

Warmer weather is just around the corner and if you want to make the most of the sunny days ahead, it’s the perfect time to get the calendar out and start planning. Read on for our guide to some of the best family-friendly days out and social and sporting events in and around our region, many of which are worth booking now.

May 2023

6th-8th: Coronation Bank Holiday Weekend

The Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday 6th May at Westminster Abbey will be marked with events across the country and a concert and laser light show at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7th May. Pubs, clubs and bars across England and Wales will be able to stay open for an extra two hours on Friday and Saturday of the coronation weekend. People are also being invited to hold street parties, and to take part in volunteering projects in their local community as part of the Big Help Out initiative.

 

Sunday 7th: Bedford Regatta

One of the largest single day river regattas in the country. For the 157th consecutive year rowers will race through the heart of the town on the picturesque River Great Ouse.

 

Sunday 14th: Grafton Point to Point

Pack a picnic and enjoy pony and horse racing at Edgcote Race Course near Banbury, with stalls and attractions for all the family.

 

Tuesday 23rd – Saturday 27th: RHS Chelsea Flower Show

The world’s greatest flower show with stunning garden designs, gorgeous floral displays and exclusive shopping opportunities.

 

Saturday 27th - Sunday 28th: Hertfordshire County Show

From Shetland pony racing to shopping, motor bike stunt riders to dogs and ducks, the Herts Show Ground in Redbourn offers something for everyone.

 

Saturday 27th May - Sunday 4th June: Colourscape, Waddesdon Manor Returning for its ninth year, Colourscape is an intense light, colour and space experience throughout 56 interlinked chambers, with unusual musical experiences along the way.

Friday 16th - Sunday 18th: Buckingham Literary Festival

This weekend celebration of books, poetry and drama welcomes a host of acclaimed authors and speakers.

 

Tuesday 20th – Saturday 24th: Royal Ascot

Revered world-wide, Royal Ascot is a racing and social calendar highlight.

 

Saturday 24th - Friday 30th: Princes Risborough Festival Week, Marlow  

Every year, Princes Risborough Town Council produce a Festival Week programme which includes a wide range of exciting events and taster sessions that have been organised and managed by Risborough businesses, groups, and charities.

 

Tuesday 27th – Sunday 2nd: Henley Royal Regatta

One of the most famous regattas in the world dating back to the 19th century. Best enjoyed with a glass of Pimms from the banks of the River Thames.

 

July 2023

Saturday 1st -Sunday 2nd: Newport Pagnell Carnival

The biggest and oldest running Carnival in Milton Keynes has a Hollywood theme this year and offers two days of live music, stalls, classic cars, a dog show and a duck race.

 

Friday 7th - Sunday 9th: Formula 1 British Grand Prix, Silverstone

The biggest and fastest sporting event in the UK and for Formula One fans, the highlight of the F1 year.

 

Monday 3rd - Sunday 16th: The Championships, Wimbledon

The oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.

 

 

August 2023

Tuesday 1st – Saturday 5th: Qatar Goodwood Festival

A highlight of the British Flat racing season, affectionately known as Glorious Goodwood.

 

Friday 4th - Sunday 6th: Monster Energy British Grand Prix MOTOGP, Silverstone 

A family friendly festival weekend based around the prestigious bike championship.

 

Saturday 5th: Blakesley Show

A traditional rural day out. The Show is made up of a wide range of exhibiting classes for horses, cattle and sheep plus over a hundred trade stands and a gymkhana. This 138th annual show is an unmissable event for lovers of country life.

 

Thursday 31st: Bucks County Show  

Weedon Park on the outskirts of Aylesbury town is home to the Bucks County Show, known as one of the best one-day agricultural shows in the country with 60 cattle classes and 30 sheep classes. There are also over 80 equine classes including show jumping and qualifiers for the Horse of the Year Show and the Royal International Horse Show.

 

September 2023

Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th: Kop Hill Climb

This festival in Princes Risborough is a celebration of the history of motoring and a chance to get up close to some priceless rare cars and bikes, all in aid of raising money for local good causes.
