The Grand Designs lifestyle often romanticises the idea of a barn conversion, and they’re right to; these coveted rural properties really do offer the best of both worlds for modern family living. Usually built from traditional local materials, they are brimming with period atmosphere and rustic charm.
The exposed stone and brick work, beams and trusses offer all the drama and features of a period property for sale, with the practicality and comfort of a new build. The finest examples are still recognisable as farm buildings, with their rural location affording idyllic settings with picturesque countryside views.
Barns are essentially open plan, but there’s no need to fear large draughty spaces in the colder months, or astronomical heating bills to keep the space warm. Building technology has come on in leaps and bounds and transformed the thermal efficiency of barns, often making them warmer than houses of the same period. Open-plan living also means huge scope for interior design, and just because you’re in the country, there’s no rule saying that you must adopt country style. Contemporary furniture and fittings will both contrast and complement the exposed wood floors and high, vaulted ceilings, which without doubt are a show stopping feature of conversions. Decorating them in light colours will maximise the sense of light and space and really showcase your barn’s rural architecture, style and features. Embrace the open-plan living and use lighting to create atmosphere; a mix of standard lamps and table lamps will give a cosy, intimate feel and help define different areas.
French windows or bi-fold doors that open onto a garden are another common feature of barn conversions, so consider a terrace and out-door furniture as part of your overall room design. Inside, a splash of floral wallpaper in the bedroom, or a paisley pattern in the living room, is another way to celebrate the rural setting. Then make sure you take time to sit back and enjoy the beautiful views.
