It’s the most wonderful time of the year

Back at the beginning of August, while most of us were waiting for the British summer to make an appearance, one luxury retailer was thinking ahead.

With almost five months to go until the ‘big day’, Selfridges opened its Christmas shop… on the first of August! A whole floor of the flagship Oxford Street store was turned into a magical seasonal masterpiece, with more than 50,000 decorations and items on show to please eager shoppers with big bucks to spend.

Bosses at Selfridges claimed it was the first store in the world to launch its 2016 Christmas shop. Two months on, others are following suit – readying themselves for the busiest retailing period of the year.

To tempt buyers through the doors, department stores will soon be unveiling their hotly anticipated Christmas window displays and, as ever, the luxury brands are expected to pull out all the stops. From next month, the famous mock-Tudor frontage of Liberty will be transformed into a fairy tale homage to the Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker.

Fans of the Tchaikovsky classic can pick up a statement decoration inside, too. The Liberty faux fur-accented wooden Nutcracker decoration could adorn the grandest of seasonal fireplaces, with an equally grand price tag of just shy of £70.

For those with a penchant for indulgence, an extravagant Christmas hamper is a must. Fortnum & Mason never disappoints, and this year, if you’re looking for something extra special you could pre-order The Imperial Hamper, available from mid-December. Although you won’t get any change from a cool £6,000, it’s a just a snip in comparison to what you’ll find down the road at Harrods.

Dubbed “the world’s most luxurious Christmas hamper”, The Decadence – filled to the brim with timeless favourites – will set you back a breath-taking £20,000. If that’s a bit of a stretch, this year’s Harrods Christmas Bear, Hugh, can bring some magic and sparkle to your home for just £400. Who could resist?

Whether you’re planning to go big and splash out this year, or preparing for a simpler, scaled back affair, you’ll no doubt agree that it is, indeed, beginning to look a lot like Christmas… and we can’t wait!
