Eco-friendly country houses on the market now

Written by Lisa Proffitt  |  10th April 2026

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Now, in addition to the climate crisis, the war in the Middle East is having a massive impact on the global energy market. 1.7 million households in Britain use oil to warm their homes, and around 40% of the supply in Europe comes from the Middle East.

The price of oil is now headline news, gas prices are at a 12-month high, and fuel prices at the pumps are hitting record highs.

This backdrop of geopolitical instability is inevitably having an impact on the UK property market. Since the war started there has been a reported surge in interest in solar panels, air source heat pumps, and EV chargers. Homeowners everywhere are determined to run their homes sustainably and energy efficiently, and drivers are keen to avoid volatile fuel prices.

Buyers searching for a new home in 2026 are increasingly likely to have eco features on their check list of non-negotiables.

New measures to reduce energy usage and bills

To increase energy control and reliability, the following measures are in the pipeline:

  • From May, shoppers will be able to buy plug-in solar panels at the supermarket for use on balconies.
  • Later this year, banks will offer zero-interest loans for solar panels, batteries, and insulation.
  • From 2028, a set of new-build regulations for England, collectively called The Future Homes Standard, will ensure that all new build homes have renewable electricity generation, mainly provided by solar power. The rules also include low-carbon heating for new builds, such as heat pumps and heat networks.
  • Installing gas boilers in new homes will be outlawed from 2029.
