Property description

A Grade II listed four bedroom house over three floors which forms part of a conversion of The Swan Inn which dates from 1530, in the conservation area in Old Stevenage.

The Swan Inn was converted in 1999 by City and Country Homes who pride themselves on the careful restoration of iconic historic buildings. The property has approximately 2,485 sq. ft of accommodation, an enclosed private garden, car parking, and a garage. The entrance is through the central courtyard of The Grange, via a Georgian style front door and an ornamental comunal garden. The ground floor has a hall with a cloakroom, a dining room, sitting room and sun room, and a kitchen/breakfast room with adjoining utility room. On the first floor there are two bedrooms, an en suite shower room and a bathroom. The two other double bedrooms and a store room are on the second floor. The landscaped south facing garden has mature protected trees and shrubs and a central lawn surrounded by paving. The garden is enclosed by a brick wall, fencing and hedging and there is a sunken patio outside the back door. A side gate leads through the grounds to the parking area and the leasehold garage.

Ground Floor

The dining room has exposed beams, a feature cast iron fireplace and half height panelled walls, and glazed double doors to the sun room which has a panoramic view over the garden. The sitting room has a brick built open fireplace, low level wall panelling, a tall window and a door to the side. The kitchen is dual aspect with views over the garden. It is fitted in a comprehensive range of full height, wall and base oak units with granite worksurfaces and integrated appliances. A door leads to a utility room.

Bedrooms and Bathroom

The principal bedroom on the first floor has a high vaulted ceiling with exposed beams, and a range of built-in wardrobes spanning one wall with a fireplace hidden behind. The en suite shower room has a shower cubicle, and a WC and washbasin set into an array of built-in vanity storage. The second bedroom is dual aspect and has a corner fireplace and a walk-in wardrobe. The main bathroom has a fitted white suite and window to the rear. On the second floor both bedrooms have corner fireplaces.

History, Situation and Schooling

Stevenage was noted as a staging post on the Great North Road and the Swan Inn was used by many notable travellers including Samuel Pepys who stayed there in 1664 and 1667 and even played bowls on the Bowling Green over the road. In the 19th century Charles Dickens would take the coach from London to visit Knebworth House and would be collected from The Swan. It is situated on the entrance to The Old Town within walking distance of the station and adjacent to Thomas Alleyne Academy and nearby Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School.
