Spice up your life: Key interior trends for this season

There’s no getting away from it, the season has definitely changed and new homeware collections have appeared everywhere tempting you to ring the changes. Even if you’re not planning major redecoration, the following five interiors trends would give your home a bit of a refresh and bring you up to date for autumn/winter 2018.

  1. Spice world: Every year Dulux gathers together designers, architects and trend forecasters to assess the global mood.  Feeling that comfort and optimism was in short supply (Brexit), they conjured up Spiced Honey as their Colour of the Year 2019.  A warm and golden caramel colour, it works particularly well as an accent wall paired with chalky white or blush pink.
  2. Go wild: Animal print was all over the autumn/winter catwalks and has leaped into interiors. Leopard is the classic statement choice and perfectly complements toffee colours like Spiced Honey for an up to the minute makeover.  However, in the same way that opinion on leopard print coats is divided here at Michael Graham, you may feel that the safari vibe is a step too far at home.  You don’t have to go the whole hog (or cheetah) though.  Consider adding a cushion or a rug as a subtle nod to the trend.
  3. A touch of cork: Eco-friendly, durable, low-maintenance and brimming with retro-charm, cork makes a sophisticated interior update. Cork flooring has wonderful elasticity and softness, you can get cork wallpaper from Graham and Green and Ikea has just launched a new cork collection, including storage boxes, trays, a table lamp and a cabinet.
  4. Back to Botanics: Floral patterns and botanical prints are bigger and bolder with the latest designs splashed over wallpapers, sofas, cushions and chairs. If you like the floral country-house look with a modern twist, head to Anthropologie.  Their new collection of bedlinen, rugs and chairs has patterns in pink, mustard, greens and blues.
  5. Black out: Charcoal, navy blue and black have nudged aside pale grey Scandi tones. It’s a bold look for walls and a great background for hanging pictures and photographs. Dark-painted kitchen units look striking and as an entry point into this dramatic trend, Sainsbury’s, Made.com and Habitat all have a range of black tableware.
