New interior design trends set to be huge in 2018

Along with dry January and new year gym resolutions, many of us have started 2018 with renewed energy for tackling all those niggling jobs and design projects around the house that didn’t quite make it off the to-do list last year. So what trends are set to be big in interior design this year? Here are the ones the Michael Graham team are most excited about.

Spa Bathrooms. Searches on Pinterest for “bathroom spa” have increased by a massive 269 per cent last year. Think total peace and relaxation with a large jacuzzi bath, monochrome tiles and earthy tones. Pure zen.

Textures. According to MADE.com’s team of designers, 2018 is the year of leather and velvet, with velvet the fabric of choice for statement soft furnishings. Preferably in Pantone’s 2018 Ultra Violet to be doubly on trend.

Pineapples. We’re staying tropical, but move over flamingos. 2018 is all about pineapples. We challenge you to walk down the high street and not find a pineapple for every room of the house, be it a mirror, patterned plate or cushion cover. You name it, someone’s designed it through a pineapple prism.

Dark woods. Although we’re still in love with Scandi design, this year furniture is moving away from the pale, bleached woods of the Nordic trend. Expect to see deep oak, mahogany and walnut pieces adding new depth to a room.

Earthy Neutrals. Sage is set to take centre stage as the new neutral, replacing pure white, beige and stone. Paired with woods and creams, the muted green will soften and warm up any space. Other pastels tipped to be hot include soft mustards, jades and olives.

Statement Ceilings. And not just at the dentist. An inventive way to transform a room from the top down, people are keeping the walls one colour but wallpapering, decorating or painting the ceiling.

Show-stopping front doors. Painted an eye-catching colour, framed with bay trees or adorned with a stunning doorknob. If you’re considering selling it’s especially important, so make sure your front door is well presented for the year ahead.

How does 2018 design sound to you? Is a statement ceiling a trend too far? We’d love to know what you think. Please get in touch in the usual way.
