Dressing the House for Christmas

It’s almost time to deck the halls and the Michael Graham team have been debating whether this is the year to ring the Christmas design changes. So, before we dust off our favourite baubles and shake out the fairy lights, are there any new 2017 trends we might want to flirt with this festive season?

Blog post intro image
  1. The tropical theme has been everywhere this year and pineapples and palm trees have a very firm place at the table and on the tree this Christmas. Think pineapple shaped glasses and glittery gold pineapple baubles. Staying tropical is the key, which makes Christmas cocktails almost compulsory.
  2. For many this will be a retro step too far, but tinsel is officially back. John Lewis have declared this a tinsel Christmas and if you can’t decide on a colour they have kindly provided a rainbow stripe tinsel for that carnival feel. Not very hygge, but oh so British.
  3. Fairy lights are everywhere. Not just on the tree, but on mantelpieces, around bannisters – in fact wherever possible around the house. Smart technology is in on the act and Twinkly is a string of festive lights that can be controlled by your smartphone, available from Amazon or John Lewis. Twinkle all the way.
  4. 2017 was a big year for metallic colours in interior design, with rose gold, copper and bronze popular choices. If you bought into that trend you’re ahead of the game for Christmas entertaining. Tableware is set to shimmer.
  5. Fashion bible Vogue is delighting fashionistas with its celebration of red as the colour for next season. Vogue calls it tomato red, equally descriptive and infinitely more seasonal is Rudolph red. A perfect choice if you want to be on trend but prefer your Christmas colours more traditional.

For further inspiration, help is at hand in the form of The Ideal Home Show at Christmas. At Olympia for the seventh year, the show has everything you need to prepare your home for the festive season. From decorations to gifts, furniture and even new year home improvement ideas (if you can think beyond the 25th), they’ve got Christmas covered. Call the ticket hotline on 0844 209 7330 or visit www.idealhomeshowchristmas.co.uk. Ticket price includes entry into the eat and drink festival where turkey and trimmings are headlining, and award-winning wine expert Olly Smith will be on hand to advise on what to decant this Christmas.
