Hot spots for cooling off

Summer is in full swing and at Michael Graham we’ve pooled our regional knowledge to bring you news of the best local lidos and splash parks. Whether you want to swim a few lengths and then strike a pose pool-side, or be invigorated at a water park, grab your swimsuit and take the plunge at the following attractions.

Bedfordshire. Lidos had their heyday in the 1930s, and Woburn Lido was given to the community back then by the Duke of Bedford. A traditional open-air pool, the lido nestles beautifully amongst the trees next to Woburn Abbey Estate (www.woburn-lido.moonfruit.com). For the more energetic, Box End Park in Kempston has two purpose-built water sports lakes for water-skiing or wakeboarding, and children aged six and above can leap, swing and climb across all sorts of inflatable obstacles in the aqua park playground (www.boxendpark.com).

Hertfordshire. Letchworth Outdoor Pool has a claim to fame. Back in May, high street giant Boots chose the lido as the location for their new television advert, which shows people rushing to an outdoor pool named ‘Luxworth Lido’ as summer begins. Keep an eye out on ITV or pop down to the pool to have a dip yourself (www.letchworthgc.com). Hitchin Swimming Centre also has a 50-metre outdoor pool (www.sll.co.uk/enterprise/Hitchin_Swimming) and The Priory Lido in Ware reopened last year after a £500,000 makeover (www.warepriory.co.uk). All the pools are heated and have grassy areas for sunbathing and picnics.

Buckinghamshire. Willen Lake is Milton Keynes’ most popular park, with open swimming and water sports galore. Now a splash park is set to open on July 15th in time for the summer holidays. Splash ‘n’ Play is for children up to 13 years old and has an impressive total of 60 water features including water cannons and jets (www.willenlake.org.uk).

Northamptonshire. Stanwick Lakes is a sprawling nature reserve in the heart of the Nene Valley. Children can paddle in the stream and enjoy bucket and spade fun on the large sandy play area, leaving you all feeling relaxed and refreshed. (www.stanwicklakes.org.uk)

Oxfordshire. Tucked away behind Woodgreen Leisure Centre in Banbury, a highlight of The Banbury Lido is the large flume adjacent to a pristine 50-metre pool. A securely-gated splash area will also keep little ones happy for hours (www.leisurecentre.com/woodgreen-leisure-centre). As with all outdoor pools, opening days and hours are changeable, so check the website before you visit and on very hot days prepare for a queue.

Michael Graham has town and country properties for sale in all the above regions. Head to our website at www.michaelgraham.co.uk, or find us on Facebook and Twitter and get in touch in the usual way.
