Add a little Christmas sparkle to your home with our top décor trends

Looking to change your Christmas decorations or just want to add some new touches? Our guide to this year’s key trends – and how to achieve them – has the answers.

Christmas is a time when we seem to constantly have guests so inevitably we want our homes to look their best. However, it can be difficult to know how to break the habit of getting the same decorations out of storage year after year.

So, we’ve round up some of the key trends for Christmas décor this year – and some tips on how to achieve them.

Fairy tale magic

As seen in this year’s Harrods Christmas collection, fairy tale inspired décor is a key trend this festive season.

A soft colour palette sees wintery whites and forest greens brought into the home with the odd touch of poisonous apple red.

Décor tip: There are a couple of ways to add your poison apples to a room – glass apples make a great centre piece or create a rounded floral arrangement in red amaryllis.

Playful kitsch

This trend moves away from the traditional Christmas colours, celebrating super bright shades and abstract decorations.

Bold colour blocks in turquoise, canary yellow and pillar-box red are contrasted with black and white, with just a touch of stone to soften the look.

Décor tip: Kitsch is key to this look but if you don’t want to go over the top make use of a couple of small pieces, for example a miniature knitted phone box.

Midnight opulence

Deep petrol blues are at the forefront of so many interiors trends this season and they are also perfect for Christmas as they provide a rich, luxurious feel.

Think plush velvets in dark colours to add depth to your scheme and pair with accessories in brushed gold or copper finishes.

Décor tip: Look for baubles and other decorations with orient-inspired designs in peacock blue and emerald green.

Nordic climes

Inspired by remote landscapes and the cool beauty of natural winter light, this look sees rustic materials from nature combined with a cool colour palette.

Sky blues, greys and white combine with conifer greens and just a touch of sparkle to transport you to an icy wonderland.

Décor tip: Don’t just stick to one wreath on the front door – decorate the exterior of the house with natural wreaths of green leaves and berries and hang one over the fireplace so you can appreciate it from the inside too.

A few top tips for success

  • Whichever trend you go for, think about the tones you already have in your home – it is far easier to create a cohesive look if you already have furnishings to match.
  • When making a wreath using natural materials, remember to spray the moss or soak a pre-filled straw ring in water first to ensure your decoration lasts for as long as possible.
